Aermacchi MB-339AM
The Aermacchi
MB-339AM, or the 'Macchi', is a basic-to-intermediate trainer used to
train RMAF pilots before they head off to other advanced jets. Apart from
that, the RMAF also tasks the Macchis with a secondary light attack role.
Entering service after the Tebuans, the MB-339AM is one of the least known
aircraft of the RMAF, as it receives very little media attention.
Constructed by Aermacchi SpA of Italy, it was first
flown in August 1976 and since then, many newer variants have been developed,
culminating in the MB-339FD (Full Digital). Each variant differs by engine
type, fuel capacity, avionics and weapons capability.
The RMAF is among the seven air forces in the world
that uses the MB-339AM variant that incorporates the Rolls Royce Viper
632 turbojet. A total of thirteen aircraft are distributed among the RMAF
Flying School and Skuadron 15 in Butterworth.
With a maximum weapons load of 1814kg, the Macchi
can carry a variety of bombs, rockets and gun pods to fulfill its secondary
ground-attack role. Apart from those, external fuel tanks can be carried
along for ferry flights and missions over extended range.
So far, the only blemish in the MB-339's record
with the RMAF is the loss of one example during an airshow incident in
1985 at Kuantuan AFB. At one time considered for retirement by the RMAF,
the MB-339AM is set to soldier on for the years to come, and in fact it
is highly probable that the RMAF might acquire the retired Kiwi MB-339Cs
which total to 17 in number.
